The Iron Rod Movement Words
How to Play:
Sing through The Iron Rod (flip chart here) with whatever verses you’re trying to teach once, before beginning this activity.
This movement words pattern will mostly relate to the chorus, though you can reuse the Iron Rod references as they are sprinkled throughout the different verses, if you’d like. Or just stick with the actions on the chorus and sing through the verse to focus on learning those words while having fun with the chorus they likely already know.
Sing the first line of the chorus as you demonstrate the two actions for “Iron” and “Rod”. Sometimes they’ll be used one after another and sometimes you’ll just use the action for “Rod.” Do you think you can catch it? Let’s sing through the song and try adding these two actions.
Now, let’s add a sequence to pat our laps 3 times – once per word – when we sing the line “Word of God.” Try it with me! Great, let’s sing from the beginning again. (Hint: You can add this pat lap pattern in the first verse for “holy word” as well if you’d like).
I think we can do one more – what words do you hear that described the Iron Rod? (Strong, Bright, True). Yes, great job! Let’s add a spin! Can you spin once while you sing that line of the song?
Or, as an alternate challenge – try snapping on each of those 3 words isntead!
Invite one class at a time to come up front and help lead the verse and demonstrate the chorus actions while everyone else follows along.
The Iron Rod Movement Actions:
- IRON: Stomp
- ROD: Clap
- STRONG-BRIGHT-TRUE (Words that describe the Iron Rod): Spin (or Snap)
- WORD OF GOD: Pat Lap
Extension Activities:
- Divide your Primary room into 2-4 groups. Assign each group 1 or 2 of the actions. They’ll do ONLY those actions through the song. Then switch to a new action! Have a child from their group hold their action sign to remind them which one they will do.
- Let the kids help you come up with their own set of actions either to switch up the ones for the chorus or to add additional actions to the verse you choose to teach.
