If you’re looking for a fun, interactive way to practice The Still Small Voice (archives) in singing time this month, you will love this The Still Small Voice Obstace Course!
With just a little bit of set up before primary, you’ll have your primary kids up out of their seats with these 3 fun challenges! For a fun way to review this song, I’ve created an obstacle course with 3 unique challenges to complete as you review each line of the song.
The Still Small Voice Obstacle Course
How to Play:
This activity requires a little bit of set-up beforehand. If you have the space available, this activity works well with 3 separate rooms. Since we’ll be doing 3 different challenges for this activity, having separate areas will provide for more space as you work your way through each course. But of course, you can simply do each activity in sequence and adapt it to fit your space!
Each of these challenges will require your primary children to rely on their senses (more nature & senses ideas) and each other (all people interactions ideas) to complete the challenge.
Set up your first room with chairs around the room to act as obstacles. In your second room, you’ll want all the lights off. You can also set up chairs in this room or create a simple maze using cardboard boxes or other large objects.
For the third room, you’ll want to hide a small speaker or something that makes noise. Turn the volume on low.
At the beginning of singing time, introduce the activity by first singing through The Still Small Voice (lyrics here).
Then, tell the kids that you’ll be doing a fun obstacle course in primary! Remind the children to follow directions carefully so that everyone can enjoy the activity.
Each class will go through the obstacle course together, and you’ll want to get each group through each challenge before moving on to the next one. Enlist the help of your teachers to encourage reverence while waiting for each class to finish.
I’ve included detailed instructions for each challenge later in this post. I’ve also included printable posters with instructions for each challenge.
You’ll notice that each challenge corresponds with 2 lines of the song. Sing through the first two lines as you complete the first challenge. Then, sing the next 2 lines while you work through the second challenge, and finish off with the last two lines for the third course.
3 Challenges:
1.‘Follow the Leader’ Obstacle Course
The basic idea for this challenge is to have the children go through a simple obstacle course with their eyes closed. Each group will have a leader who can quietly guide each person past the obstacles.
For this challenge, set up chairs around the room as obstacles. Have a starting point as well as a finish line. Remind the kids to keep their eyes closed or use a blindfold as each child goes through the course. This challenge will require the children to listen carefully to the leader to get through the obstacles successfully!
2. Dark Maze
This challenge involves maneuvering through obstacles in the dark! You’ll have to use your sense of sight to complete the course. Turn off the lights and place some obstacles in the room.
Give each child a flashlight or finger light as they go through the maze. You might also have a leader standing closeby for any children who might be afraid of the dark.
3. Search for the Sound
This challenge requires careful listening skills, but in a different way than the first course! Hide a small speaker in the room and play quiet nature sounds or songs. As each child enters the room, have them quietly listen to find the sound!
Extension Activities:
- Simplify this activity for Junior primary children by choosing just one or two of the challenges! Keep it simple by singing through the song as everyone works through one challenge.
- Play a game of Hot & Cold! Have a volunteer leave the room as you hide an object. When they return, use singing clues to help them find the object. Sing quietly when they are far away and grow louder as they get closer!
- Incorporate a spiritual tie-in for each challenge. How would the challenge be different without having a guide? How does the Holy Ghost act like a light? How can we listen quietly for His voice?
