The Still Small Voice Crossword Puzzle
This word game (archives) is especially great for Senior primary children, but it can also be easily adapted to work for younger primary kids as well. Your primary kids will have so much fun trying to decode the clues and solve the puzzle together!
I’ve created a simple crossword puzzle with 10 clues from the song lyrics for a fun way to review this song. You can find this printable puzzle, along with word clues later in this post.
Before primary, print out a copy of the crossword puzzle, key, and clues. You’ll want to have some writing utensils as well. Crayons, markers, or pencils will all work wonderfully for this activity!
Start by reviewing The Still Small Voice (flip chart here) at the beginning of singing time. Then, post the crossword puzzle on the board, keeping the key tucked away for reference.
Choose a volunteer to pick a number and a direction. Have the children listen as you read aloud the clue for that word. Can anyone think of the correct word? Once they guess the right word, have the child come up and fill in those blanks in the puzzle.
Continue solving for words in the puzzle one at a time. It may be helpful to sing through the song every few rounds to help spark some ideas. The kids might even catch on that the words are directly from the song!
If needed, feel free to provide additional hints to help the kids solve the puzzle. Finish by singing through the song once more after you solve the puzzle!

The trickiest part about this puzzle is that we have a few words that are very similar, like the words, “Guide,” “Lead,” and “Direct.” Be sure to look carefully at the number of letters for each word blank to make sure you have the correct word!
ACROSS:
- Another word for “Says” (SPEAKS)

- Someone who helps others know where to go (GUIDE)
- Straight or undeviating (DIRECT)
- Another word for “Hear” (LISTEN)
DOWN:

Extension Activities:
- For younger primary children, use simple pictures or symbols in addition to your clues. Then, help them fill out the crossword puzzle or simply write in the letters for them.
- Pass out individual crossword puzzles to each child to work on while you quietly listen to the song. You might even make it a race to see who can finish first! Then, practice the song together.
- Make it a group activity! Give each class a puzzle and have them work together to solve for each word blank. Then, assign each class a few words from the puzzle to sing extra loud!
- Post the clues on the board along with the puzzle. As you sing, have the children raise their hands if they think they know one of the words in the puzzle. Each time you finish singing, fill in one of the word blanks.
