Many children thrive on visuals to help them learn. Using even a simple picture can help something stick in their minds much longer than simply hearing or reading it. That’s why I love simple activities like this one!
Learning a hymn can be a little tricky, especially for longer hymns like I Believe in Christ (archives). Hopefully this magic crayon activity will make teaching these lyrics a breeze!
The basic idea behind this activity is to draw imaginary shapes in the air to represent key words in the song. It sounds super simple, and it is! Your imaginary art will have your primary kids hooked right from the start!
Start by reviewing the first verse of I Believe in Christ (lyrics here) before introducing this activity. If your primary children are having a hard time with the words, be sure to grab our flip chart to help!
Today I brought my imaginary crayon! When I move my finger in the air, it magically becomes a crayon and draws whatever I’m thinking! Can you tell what I’m drawing? Draw a simple shape and see if the kids can guess correctly!
We’re going to use our magic crayons to help us remember the words to this song! Let’s start at the beginning. As you sing, “I believe in Christ,” draw a hand in the air as if you are raising your hand. Then, draw a crown as you sing the phrase, “He is my king.”
I’ve created a pattern with simple shapes for each line of the song. Keep scrolling for a full outline of the pattern and be sure to grab the printable later in this post!
Post the magic crayon symbols on the board to aid as you draw shapes together. Work through the song line by line. Then, see if you can do all the shapes for the entire verse! This is a great way to get in more song practice.
Finish by “putting away” your magic crayons and sharing your testimony about the Savior.

Extension Activities:
- Split the class into two large groups. Have one group learn the magic crayon shapes for the first 4 lines of the song, and have the second group learn the shapes for the last 4 lines. Then, have them teach each other!
- Play a game of picture match! Write out each phrase of the song and cut out the magic crayon shapes. Put all the shapes on one side of the board and lyrics on the other. Match the pictures/symbols to the correct phrase as you sing!
- Add an additional element and use this magic crayon activity with dance scarves or ribbon wands! Simply create the shapes with your wands or scarves as you sing together. For a fun way to get in more practice, have one side do ribbon wands while the other side uses their magic crayons. Then, switch!
