To help your primary children better understand our relationship with the Savior, use this neat I Believe in Christ Lyrics Split activity! Look at the song lyrics and organize the words into categories to compare who Christ is and what he did for us and how we worship Him.
This logical conclusions activity (more ideas) is a great way to dive a little deeper into the song lyrics as you learn this beautiful hymn in singing time this month!
I Believe in Christ Lyrics Split
The hymn, I Believe in Christ (archives) is such a sweet song about our Savior. This song can become a seed of faith for your primary children as they grow in their relationship with Christ.
The main purpose of this activity is to help your primary kiddos gain a better understanding of who the Savior is and how we can show our love for Him while practicing this song.
I’ve created a simple printable chart with two columns, “Me” and “Him.” I’ve also included words from the song that indicate things about us (what we feel, what we do) and things about Christ (who He is, what He did). Print and cut out all the word strips before singing time.
Before introducing this activity, begin by reviewing the first verse of I Believe in Christ (lyrics here).
Then, post the two categories on the board. Sing through the song again, and encourage the children to listen for things that WE feel or do. These actions will go in the “Me” column.
Have the children raise their hands to share what we do or feel. Add the feeling/action to the list. Can you find all 5? Here are some words in the song that describe how we feel about Christ or what we do to worship Him:
- Believe
- Sing
- Praise
- Joy
- Amens (Prayer)
Then, sing through the song again. This time, listen for words about Christ. Who is Jesus? What did He do? These words will go under the category, “Him.” There are 6 words in the first verse that describe who Jesus is and what He did for us:
- King
- God’s Son
- Came to Earth
- Healed
- Raised the Dead
- Good Works
Have the children share their answers and add words to the list as you discuss. Once you have found all 6 words or phrases about Christ, compare your lists. Do you notice any differences in what we do compared to what Christ does?
Be sure to share your own testimony of the Savior throughout this activity. What do we learn about Him? How can we show our love for Him?
Extension Activities:
- Split the class into two groups. Have one group work together to find words and phrases for the category, “Me” and have the other group look for phrases to fit under the category, “Him.” Then, have each group share what they found.
- Have half the class sing words under the category, “Me” and have the other half sing words/phrases under the category, “Him.” Then, switch! This is a great way to get in lots of song practice!
- Challenge the children to think of examples or experiences to share for each column. Can you think of an example of when Jesus healed the sick? When have you felt joy? Questions like these can deepen this activity and further invite the Spirit.
- Tape all the word strips on the board at the beginning of singing time. As you sing, have the children sort the word strips into the correct categories. Each time you sing through the song, add another word or two to each column.
