Follow the Prophet (archives) is a great song to learn this year! The Old Testament is filled with faithful prophets who prophesied of Jesus Christ and learned to trust Heavenly Father. Whether you’re teaching one verse of this song, or all 9 verses, this matching activity can be a great way to review!
Once you’ve started learning this song, it can be helpful to have a picture in your mind to remember the words to the song. For young children, it can be difficult to keep all the verses straight with so many different prophets to remember. This activity is such a fun way to practice learning the prophets!
Follow the Prophet Matching Activity
For this activity, I started by compiling pictures of Old Testament prophets from the church website. I chose one picture for each prophet, and included our current prophet, President Russell M. Nelson. You can find the words to the new verse in our Follow the Prophet Flip Chart.
The pictures were relatively easy to find once I did some research. I found each of the pictures under the “Gospel Art” media collection.
Once you have your pictures, write or type out the names of each Old Testament prophet. To help you prepare for this activity, I’ve created a lesson plan for this activity that includes a printable of names and pictures. This printable can be found later in the post and is accessible when signed in!
Print out the names and pictures and arrange them on the board. Place the names on one side of the board, with the pictures on the other side. Invite children to match names to pictures while you sing each verse!
You may choose to start by inviting children to find the prophet for each verse as you sing. If your primary kiddos are already pretty familiar with the song, you might choose to see how many prophets can be matched during one verse!
Activity Instructions:
- Begin by printing or writing out the names of Old Testament prophets. You might also choose to include some modern-day prophets as well.
- Print out pictures of each prophet you include.
- At the beginning of primary, review a verse or two of Follow the Prophet Lyrics.
- After reviewing the song, tape or use magnets to arrange pictures and words on the board. Make sure they are mixed up!
- Take turns matching the picture to the prophet while you sing!
- Continue singing until all prophets are matched to their picture.
This activity is excellent for both Junior and Senior primary because it includes simple words and visuals to aid understanding. If Junior primary kiddos have a tough time matching the pictures to the words, you may want to sing a verse to help bring a specific prophet to their memory.
You can also simplify this activity by only showing a few names and pictures at a time. This will narrow down the number of options children have when matching prophets.
Extension Ideas:
- Make it a group competition! Split the class into groups and give each group a set of names and pictures. See which class can match their prophets the fastest!
- Go through the pictures one at a time while you sing each verse. For example, if you are singing the third verse, see who can find the picture of Noah on the board.
- Give each group a set of prophets and pictures. Have each group only sing the verses for their prophets!
