As I read and ponder the words of this sweet hymn, I can’t help but get teary! I’m so thrilled that I Believe in Christ (archives) is included in this year’s song list. As you spend time teaching the lyrics and melody of this hymn, invite the Spirit with this I Believe in Christ Testimony Cards lesson.
Share testimonies together using simple testimony prompts included in this post. Our hope is that this activity will help your primary children better understand the tender message of this song while strengthening their own testimonies.
I Believe in Christ Testimony Cards
When I listen to the words of this song, it reads exactly like a testimony. I can just imagine Bruce R. McConkie standing to read these lyrics as a sweet testimony of the Savior.
As you teach this song in primary, have your primary children share their testimonies of the Savior! This spiritual connection singing time idea is a simple, yet powerful way to help the message of this song sink into your hearts as you sing together.
I’ve created simple cards with helpful prompts for sharing a testimony. Print and cut out all 4 testimony cards before primary. These are great for future use, so I recommend laminating each card so that you can use them again!
Begin by singing through the first verse of I Believe in Christ (flip chart here!). As you do so, invite the children to pay close attention to the words. After you finish singing, ask the children what this song is about. Who is this song about?
This song sounds a lot like a testimony. Can anyone tell us what a “testimony” is? Ask for a volunteer to share their definition of testimony. *Tip: This activity works especially great on a fast Sunday so that the kids have a reference point!
Ask if there is anyone who would be willing to share their testimony of Jesus. Read the testimony cards aloud to help spark some ideas. Invite a volunteer to come up and share a brief, 1 minute testimony with the class.
After thanking them for their testimony, sing through the song again. Each time you sing through the song, have a volunteer come up and choose a card. Have them share a simple experience or just share a brief testimony.
At the end of singing time, ask the children how they feel. This peaceful feeling we get when we share and hear each other’s testimonies is the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost testifies of Christ and confirms truth to our hearts. Finish by sharing your own testimony of the Savior.
Testimony Prompts:
To help your primary children think of their own experiences with the Savior, I’ve included 4 simple testimony prompts. If the kids are having a hard time thinking about what to share, these prompts can help!
These prompts are definitely not an all-inclusive list, and a testimony does not need to include a story. A testimony can be as simple as stating your belief in Christ. These are just some ideas to get everyone thinking.
- A time I felt loved was when…
- A time I was healed was when…
- A time I sang praise was when…
- A time I was rescued was when…
Extension Activities:
- If you have a lot of shy children, you may want to start by sharing testimonies in small groups. This can feel much less scary. Have each class sit in a circle and share testimonies together. When there is a good moment to pause, have everyone come back and sing through the song together.
- Share examples from the scriptures! Can you think of a time someone in the scriptures was healed? Rescued? Loved? What about in your own life?
- Pass out index cards and pencils and invite the children to write down a brief testimony while quietly listening to the song. After the song is over, invite anyone who wants to share what they wrote to come up and read from their own testimony card.
- Invite teachers to come up and share their testimonies! This can be a great way to set an example for the kids and help them build up the courage to come up.
