4th of July Color in the Flag

Summer can be a busy time for music leaders! Many music leaders are in the thick of reviewing for their primary program around this time. With holidays and vacations mixed in, it can be hard to know what to prioritize!

Luckily, this simple color in the flag activity can easily be woven into your singing time plans for the month and add a festive flair! If you are planning on teaching a patriotic song this month, this activity will be a great way to help your primary children better understand the meaning behind this red, white, and blue holiday!

If you want to focus on primary program prep, this activity works great for that too! Just choose which song(s) you want to focus on and have some fun coloring the flag as you review!

The basic idea behind this activity is to start with a blank American flag. As you review songs together, color in the stars and stripes or have the children write in things they love about America. This is a great way to really get the kids thinking as you plan for your 4th of July celebrations.

I’ve included a simple black-and-white printable flag later in this post that you can grab for this activity. Alternatively, draw a large flag on the board before singing time. When the kids arrive, ask them if they can identify what’s on the board.

Hm, it looks like some things on this flag are missing! It needs some red, white, and blue! Let’s color it in together while we sing.

Sing through your selected song once or twice, then invite a few children to come to the board and color in a stripe or write something they love about America. You may want to help them out by drawing a red line in all the red stripes and using a black or silver marker to point out all the white stripes.

Have the kids take turns coming up to add to the flag. At the end of singing time, you could read through the responses and share a few things you love about America. One of the things I’m most grateful for is that the Book of Mormon came forth in this country. The restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ was possible because of the freedoms we enjoy today, like the freedom to worship.

To help your children get some ideas about what to write, maybe have a few guiding questions or examples. Here are some topics you could think about:

  • Freedoms we enjoy
  • Unique things about America
  • Favorite sights to see in the U.S.
  • Favorite traditions
  • Gospel doctrines restored

As you start thinking of some of your own favorite things about America, the list starts to multiply! See what you can come up with as a class. You might even set a benchmark goal, such as “20 Things We Love About America.” Get creative and have some fun with this simple 4th of July activity!

Extension Activities:

  • Have each child color their own flag while you sing! Encourage them to write something they are grateful for or something they love about America.
  • Each time someone colors in a stripe, have them lead the next song! Use this as an opportunity to teach the kids how to lead music or simply have them help by leading the group in singing.
  • Since there are 13 stripes on the flag, choose 13 different songs to sing! Write each song title on a strip of paper and have a child pick a new song each time you color in a stripe.
  • Combine this visual activity with another festive 4th of July singing time idea! Create “stations” around the room with one activity at each station. Rotate through as you play different patriotic games and review primary songs!
Pioneer Headbandz Hats Singing Time Game - Mix and match these pioneer children with adorable hats! You can assign a song to each child and a way to sing to each hat. Or use the hats as a fun headbandz game! Printable song helps for LDS Primary music leaders.
