4th of July Pom-Pom Actions
I’m so excited to share this simple pom-pom activity with you! Whether you are using this activity as a way to review your current songs or to teach a patriotic song (here’s our list of over 70+ summer primary songs!), this activity comes together so quickly!
A few years ago, the Dollar Tree had these adorable red, white, and blue pom-poms in sets of 3! We are always on the hunt for simple manipulatives to incorporate in singing time, so these were a must-have!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find them again this year. If you are looking for a simple pom-pom swap, I have just the thing for you: patriotic tinsel!
I decided to get creative and make some “homemade” pom-poms using patriotic tinsel I found at the Dollar Tree. I just cut two short pieces, about 6” long, and looped each piece around the other. Then, I twisted the wire at the bottom and had some simple pom-poms in about 5 minutes!
You can also make pom-pom bracelets for your primary kiddos by cutting a longer piece of tinsel and tying it in a circle. This may be a fun option for younger primary children! Here’s what they look like:
I’ve created 12 printable pom-pom action cards with simple movements that pair well with any primary song! Just grab these patriotic cards included later in this post and cut out each card. Fold all the cards and place them in a bowl or jar before singing time.
At the beginning of singing time, sing through your song of choice once before passing out pom poms to each child. You can also split into pairs to share the pom-poms if you don’t have enough for each child to have their own set.
Then, simply choose a volunteer to come up and pick a pom-pom action! Try the action together once, then add in some music! You can choose just one action or pick a few to rotate through as you sing.
Continue trying out these fun actions with patriotic pom-poms as you sing together in primary!

- Clap Together
- Fast Shake
- Toss & Catch
- Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes
Extension Activities:
- Create your own pattern using the pom-pom actions! Choose 3-4 action cards and have the kids arrange them in any order. Then, follow the order as you sing through the song! Then, rearrange the cards to create a new pattern or swap out an action for a new one!
- Choose a few key words in the song to focus on. Choose a pom-pom action to do each time you sing that word. The tricky part will be holding the pom-poms still for the rest of the song!
- Write a bunch of primary song titles on strips of paper to place in another bowl. Choose one child to pick the song and another to pick the action. Kids love to participate, and this is a great way to get in lots of turns.
- Follow the leader! Have a child come up and lead the class in some actions. You can have them choose from the action cards or come up with their own. Have the rest of the class mirror their actions for one song. Then, choose a new leader to follow!
- Bring in a variety of rhythmic instruments to use instead. Jingle bells, egg shakers, or paper plates will all work great with these action cards!
