Pioneer Children Hats & Headbandz Game

Here’s a new and fun Pioneer Day singing time idea! You’ll adore this fun Pioneer Children Hats & Headbandz Game! Simply match a child with a pioneer day themed hat, use a secret keyword to guess with your own pioneer-era hats, or try on the illustrated hats in child sized printouts!

Pioneer Children Hats Headbandz Game

How to Play:

Invite a child to come up front and pick out a hat to try on! They’ll “wear” the hat and then you can use a post-it note or a paper clip to attach a keyword from your song of choice to the hat.

Sing through the song and everyone SKIPS singing the keyword on the post it note. If you have a bunch of younger children in your group, you can invite your volunteer to step out of the room and pick a hat with the Primary secretary in the hallway while you share the secret word with the rest of the Primary.

After you have finished the song, ask the child to guess what keyword is on their hat! If they were listening closely to the missing word they should be able to get it.

You can also give some additional help by singing just 1 isolated line of the song and humming in place of the missing keyword to help them more easily guess.

Now, repeat! Pick a new volunteer and new keyword! You can use the same song, a mix of songs, or focus on pioneer songs! Just pick out keywords ahead of time and you’re ready.

Extension Activities:

• Assign each hat to be a specific song or specific verse. That way, the kids can pick not only their hat but with it which song to sing!
• Invite the volunteer to ask some questions to help them guess the word. Then everyone sings the secret word together extra loud!
• Pick a fun action to do for the secret word instead to help your volunteer guess the word. You might all tap your head, make a small bounce in your seat like when you sing “sunbeam,” clap on the keyword, of anything else you can think of!

• Instead of putting hats on your own Primary children, you can put all of the Primary children up on the board and match them with a hat of your choice. Assign a song to the children and a silly way to sing to the hats and then sing the song chosen with the silly action match.
• Have each hat represent a silly and fun way to sing! Pick a song to review then add a hat!
