Are you teaching the hymn, I Believe in Christ (archives) this year in primary? I love the beautiful words in this hymn that testify of our Savior. However, sometimes it can be tricky to keep all the words straight! In fact, I often catch myself mixing up the verses!

How to Play:
The basic idea behind this word representations activity is to omit a few words in the song and see if your primary children can figure out which lyrics are missing. As you review, fill in the missing word blanks until you have all the lyrics on the board!
I’ve created a simple printable with all the lyrics for the first verse of this hymn included later in this post. The only catch? Some of the words are missing!
Begin with a quick review of the first verse of I Believe in Christ (lyrics here). I always like to start with singing to invite the Spirit and encourage reverence.
Then, post the first page of the fill in the blank with a few phrases of the song. Uh oh! It looks like some of our lyrics are missing. Can you help me figure out the missing words?
Start with the first missing blank and look for a volunteer to come up and fill in the missing word. For younger primary children, drawing simple pictures to represent missing words may also be a good idea. Simply write out the word or draw a picture on the line.
Once you have filled in the blanks for one page, sing through the lyrics and continue! Keep working together to fill in all the missing word blanks. At the end of singing time, sing through the entire song once more before closing.
Fill in the Blank Examples:
Here are just a few examples of fill in the blank phrases included in the free printable for this post. As always, this activity is super easy to adapt for any of the verses you are teaching.
Simply write out the song lyrics and erase a word in each line! Try to add some variety by omitting words at the beginning, middle, and end of phrases. Here’s an example from the first two lines of the song:
- I believe in ________ (CHRIST)
- He is my ________ (KING)
- With all my ________ (HEART)
- To Him I’ll _________ (SING)
Extension Activities:
- Divide up the fill in the blank pages between classes. Have each class fill in the blanks for their assigned pages and sing their part.
- Cut out the fill in the blank phrases into word strips. Mix up the word strips and fill in all the blanks. After writing in the missing words, rearrange the word strips into the correct order!
- Choose a silly action to do each time you sing one of the word blanks. Alternatively, simply skip or hum instead of singing the blanks!
- For some extra helps, create a word bank with all the missing words. You could also print some simple pictures to include as well. Refer to your word bank to fill in each missing lyric.
- Use this same activity to review the second, third, or fourth verse! Just write out the lyrics and remove a few words in each line. Or, for an extra challenge, create fill in the blank stips for ALL 4 verses and see if you can correctly fill in all the missing words!
