I can’t think of a better way to teach The Still Small Voice (archives) than talking about how the Holy Ghost can help to protect us spiritually from the dangers around us in the world. I love the important lessons we can pull out from the song lyrics as we teach this song in our Primary room!
In this The Still Small Voice Spiritual Protections lesson plan, we’ll add symbols and objects that help us relate the things mentioned in song and everyday objects that can help us remember those ideas in a more tangible way.
The Still Small Voice Spiritual Protections
For this activity, I’ve hand drawn a cute Primary boy and all the spiritual protections referenced in the song to use as an interactive poster as you add each of the elements. This is included in the membership and shop packet. But the same activity can be adapted to use with real objects from around the home or use the spiritual protection symbol cards included as a free printable! I’ll share both activity ideas here.
How to Play:
Sing through The Still Small Voice with this flip chart once, before introducing this activity. This is a great way to help transition to your new activity and remind the children of the lyrics and song you are singing.
Then, put your Primary child illustration up on the board. Do you see this boy? He’s just like you and me. He needs some help and protection from the Holy Ghost to keep him safe. We’ll add some of those today.
Sing through the first line of the song together. Ask the children, what did you hear in that line of the song? What did the Spirit do? (He speaks to me!) Show the symbol of the speech bubble and how that is a way he helps protect us.
Add another part of the song from the beginning of the song through “to guide me”. I heard another one! Did you hear it? How is the Holy Ghost helping him now? (Guides me) Yes, that’s right! A map can be a guide for us. Show the map symbol and how a map can represent the Spirit guiding us through hard questions.
Continue to work your way through the song adding your spiritual protection symbols.

- Map – GUIDE ME – Helps us to find truth and answers to questions.
- Glasses – SAVE ME – Helps us to see clearly how things really are.
- Flashlight – LEAD ME – Shows us a safe path through our trials.
- Sign post – DIRECT ME – Gives direction and purpose in our choices.
- Shield – PROTECT ME – Helps to protect us from dangers around us.
- Picture of Jesus – GIVES HIS LIGHT – Testifies of who Jesus Christ is to us.
Extension Activities:
- Use an interactive poster to add different spiritual protections as things the Primary child can hold to help him on his journey through life as the Spirit helps give protection and help along his way.
- Bring in physical objects and use those to help demonstrate the spiritual protections spoken of in the song. You can invite a child to sit up front and add all the protections for them to hold!
- You can have the children draw the spiritual protections on the white board instead of adding the pre-drawn elements as they help you decide on symbols.
- Hide symbol cards around the room and go on a hunt for them. As each one is found, talk about the symbols and how it represents a way the spirit helps to protect us. Then sing through the song again.
