The Still Small Voice Good Choices Experiments

Using an object lesson in singing time can be a powerful way to teach a gospel principle and keep your primary children engaged. I’m so excited to share two simple object lessons that you can incorporate for this activity!

As you teach The Still Small Voice (all activities), use one or both of these water experiments to help your primary children better understand the role of the Holy Ghost. I’ve provided instructions for both object lesson below, as well as a demonstration video to help you prepare!

Reversing Arrow Experiment

This reversing arrow experiment is super cool! If you’ve never seen this experiment done before, I’ve shared a video below that provides a basic run-down of how it works!

Before singing time, gather the materials needed. For this experiment, you’ll want to have a clear, circular vase. It’s important that the vase is a cylinder, or the experiment won’t work! You’ll also need 2 pieces of paper and a pitcher of water.

Cut the paper in half and fold each half to create two “tents.” Write the word, “Good” on one piece of paper, and write the word, “Bad” on the other piece. I’ve also included printable versions of these cards that you can grab later in this post! On a small piece of paper, draw a large arrow. I used a folded index card.

Set up the experiment by placing the empty vase or jar in the center of the table. Set up the “good” and “bad” labels next to the vase, with one on each side. Place the arrow behind the vase pointing toward “Bad.”

At the beginning of singing time, explain that you’ll be doing a cool experiment using water. The vase represents us! Every day, we have the choice to make good decisions or bad decisions. Notice that the arrow is pointing toward bad decisions. Sometimes we want to choose a bad decision.

Hold up the pitcher of water. The water represents the Holy Ghost. What do you think will happen when we pour water into the vase?

Pour water into the vase and watch the arrow magically flip! Discuss how the Holy Ghost can help us make good choices! Finish by singing through the song and sharing your testimony of the Holy Ghost.

Sponge Object Lesson:

For this object lesson, you’ll want to have a sponge or dish scrubby and a pitcher or jar with water. I recommend bringing a large bowl to prevent a big water mess!

The sponge represents our spirits! The water represents things we can do to strengthen our testimonies. What are some ways we can strengthen our testimonies? Here are some ideas: Attending/Participating in church, going to the temple, serving our families, praying, reading scriptures, ministering, etc.

While holding the sponge over an empty bowl, slowly pour a little bit of water onto the sponge. When we fill our spirits with good things, our testimonies can become stronger.

Then, sing through The Still Small Voice (flip chart here) while you wait for the sponge to dry. What happens if we don’t put any water in the sponge? It will dry out! We need to regularly fill our spirits with testimony-building experiences.

Extension Activities:

  • Enlist the help of your primary presidency to have stations for each experiment. Set up 2 tables in the room, one for each object lesson. If you have a larger primary, you can set up 2 stations for each experiment. Set a short timer and have a leader demonstrate the experiment to their small group. Then, rotate when the time is up so that everyone can see both experiments!
  • Add to the “Good Choices” experiment by sharing simple scenarios and having the children decide which choice to make. Each time a good choice is made, add a little bit more water and see how the arrow flips!
  • Combine these object lessons with our Telephone Game for another simple object lesson that teaches the importance of listening to the Holy Ghost!
